About the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic)

Rev. Fr. Professor Innocent Ebere Uwah is a distinguished scholar, administrator, and Catholic priest with a strong background in Film Studies, Ethics, and Theology. He holds a PhD from Dublin City University, Ireland, and is a fellow of both the Africa House Fellowship at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and the Combe Trust Fellowship at the Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom.

A Man With Vision

Renowned for his visionary leadership and commitment to holistic human development, Professor Uwah integrates gospel values into both Church and academic life. As Director of Social Communications in his home Diocese, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to research, communication, and ethical engagement in society. His scholarly interests lie at the intersection of Ethics, Theology, and Film in Society.


 

In recognition of his contributions to communication and scholarship, he received the Global Partners’ Award in Communications in the United States in 2010.

A Professor of Film Studies, Professor Uwah has an impressive portfolio of academic publications. Notable among his works are:

  • The Rhetoric of Culture in Nollywood (2013; revised U.S. edition, 2019)

  • Nollywood Nation – On the Industry, Practice and Scholarship of Cinema in Nigeria (2019, co-edited)

  • Moral Dilemmas in the Discourse of Cinema, Ethics and Society (2024)
    He has also authored numerous journal articles in both local and international publications.

  • Professor Uwah was appointed the pioneer Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic) of Nigerian British University in December 2024 following a rigorous selection process by the University’s Board of Trustees. Prior to this, he served as the pioneer Dean of the School of General Studies and Entrepreneurship Development at the same institution. Before joining NBU, he was the Head of the Department of Theatre and Film Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, where he has been a faculty member since 2011.
